I just ran across this version of one of the greatest compositions of modern times (IMNSHO) on Spotify. I’m pretty sure this one on Youtube is the same recording. Compare and contrast to the original, also below.
The original:
I don’t know what to attribute to arrangement, engineering, whatever, but the newer one is a little off-putting to me. When the horns start near the beginning, it almost seems like they’re an octave higher, or maybe different or fewer instruments are used. Either way, it’s definitely missing something.
